The money raised by your donations goes to the following areas - the 2009-2010 school year budget is $375,000.

MUSIC:
PFC funding makes possible school wide participation in a comprehensive music program, encompassing music history, singing, appreciation, movement and rhythm instrument instruction. In addition, Carpenter’s award-winning music specialist, Kimberly Taweel, orchestrates the school’s annual Winter Holiday Program, Carpenter on the Green, the 3rd-5th grade chorus, and the 5th grade musical.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION:
This program, meets all federal, state and LAUSD mandated standards and offers all Carpenter students 30 minutes of physical education each week, guided by our credentialed coach, Marty Rackham. Coach Marty works with classes to teach children about sports (rules, techniques and sportsmanship), personal physiology, self esteem and health.

DANCE:
Our dance program fills a portion of the Physical Education requirements as well as meeting the standards for arts curriculum as set forth in the LAUSD standards. Students receive 30 minute dance classes for up to half the school year which emphasize movement, stretching, and traditional dances. We have expanded our program so that it now includes our Kindergarten-5th grade classes, all taught by Susan Linville. We also have 2 recitals each year so that the families can enjoy the performances of their children.

SCIENCE ENRICHMENT:
Last year, we were able to provide a full time specialist for the new Science Lab. PFC funding allows our specialist Lori Belateche to work with all grades K-5, each week. The classroom science curriculum is reinforced by hands on science experiments in the lab. This opportunity to work on science projects has been embraced by our students, staff and district. PFC also provides funding for school buses to transport classes on science-related field trips.

MEDIA LAB:
Carpenter’s newly updated  Media Lab, offers all students in grades K through 5 the opportunity to explore new technology in weekly classes led by their teachers and supported by a dedicated media lab instructor, Michael Benson. The instructor is also available to work with teachers in planning and coordinating lab projects designed to familiarize students with current word processing, presentation and design software. As a result of our fundraising and the School District’s settlement with Microsoft, we have 30 new computers in our Media Lab and have moved newer computers into the classrooms.

ACE PROGRAM/ 4th AND 5th GRADE CLASS DOWNSIZING:
PFC funding supports a credentialed education specialist, Mia Grayck,  who works with small groups of students for language arts and math, helping to ensure students are learning grade-level standards.  This “pullout” program is divided into language arts classes (one per grade), and math classes (one per grade).  All students benefit from an enhanced teacher-to-student ratio during the pullout period. In addition, this funding supports a dedicated aide to assist 4th and 5th grade teachers.

BEAUTIFICATION:
Twice a year, parents volunteer a weekend day to refresh the Carpenter campus, ensuring a pleasant and safe learning environment for all students. This program is made possible by the effort of community volunteers and funding from PFC and the PTA.

CARPENTER ON THE GREEN:
Sponsored by PFC, this special year-end program brings together all Carpenter families for an outdoor celebration and picnic on the school’s grass field. The event showcases musical performances by the student body and highlights the success of Carpenter’s music enrichment program.

COLLABORATION:
Carpenter’s Collaboration Program permits all teachers in a single grade level to meet weekly during school hours to discuss educational strategies for enhanced classroom learning. During collaboration, a coaching staff, overseen by our credentialed PE instructor, directs physical education and supervises the student body, making possible this cooperative effort.

COPY AID:
Your donations to Parents For Carpenter pay for an aide 15 hours per week to photocopy classroom handouts and learning materials for teachers at Carpenter. This service enables teachers and classroom aides to focus on students.

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS:
Funding from PFC and the PTA supports Carpenter’s Disaster Preparedness Program, which ensures that the school possesses adequate supplies necessary for managing an emergency.

EQUIPMENT & IMPROVEMENTS:
Funding from PFC donations help keep our campus safe and beautiful. From helping to fund the maintenance of the grass field to beautifying  the front of the school (a joint venture with PTA), our equipment & improvements budget keeps us looking good.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL/PARENT TOURS:
To ensure Carpenter makes a positive first impression on new and prospective student families, Carpenter’s Welcome Committee, in concert with the administration and the Hospitality Committee, offers a first-day program, as well as ongoing tours to prospective Carpenter families. This program is funded jointly by PFC and the PTA.

HOSPITALITY:
This committee, funded by donations to the PFC and the PTA, provides food and beverage support for parent organization meetings throughout the school year.

TEACHER APPRECIATION:
Your Parents for Carpenter and PTA donations, help pay for holiday gifts and a teacher lunch during a week-long school-wide event which include students, parents and administrators in a special celebration of Carpenter’s dedicated teaching staff.

WISH LIST:
Working closely with each of Carpenter’s teachers, the PFC provides every classroom teacher with $25 per student for the acquisition of educational materials required to support specialized curricula. Often this money, at the discretion of the classroom teacher, goes towards classroom art supplies, and enriched programs for the class.
